12 Whole Grains
This image comes from different places in my mind. By that, I mean I look for things to paint that are complicated and difficult. This fits the bill. I also have things in my mind that are like favorite things - toast is one of those things - toasted whole wheat or multi grain, hearty bread without butter, dry. The flavor goes right up my nose…it is soooo good. I also look for compositions that go closer than how the subject is usually shown, giving a sense of intimacy - nowhere else to look but at toast or the wall. This also has a tie in with my weekly habits. I go out for coffee with friends on Wednesdays - a bunch of retired teachers. We all usually have the same thing…mine is “dry wheat toast, please.” I used to get comments like, “Dry? With nothing on it?” Now it is a standard, sometimes I don’t even have to order it, it just comes from the kitchen. So this piece of toast is a symbol for friendship and camaraderie. It is also a symbol, at least for me, of things one loves but for the sake of health (excess weight) chooses not to have. I could eat bread all day long but I have only one slice for lunch and two slices when I have coffee with friends. So there you have it. So, if you wondered why would anybody ever paint a painting depicting toast - now you have at least one reason.
