The Fabric of Society
This piece is the second in a series of paintings I am doing to see if I can handle the nebulous world of abstraction. I confess I still have a problem with not being guided by the “rules” of reality. I’m sure I bring some of that with me into this new world.
The intent of this painting is to show, symbolically the fabric of society beginning to unravel. I used the image of thicker, stronger looking elements to represent the deeper enduring underlying traits that are part of this fabric. These elements are held together in tension by slimmer strands that can more easily break, when stressed. I believe these parts have both been severed, not broken due to stress, but actually, maliciously cut with intent. I guess it is a pessimistic piece.
In some areas I used a very immediate stroke, leaving rough edges symbolizing the general imperfections we all have. In other areas I used edges that are more refined, clearer, symbolizing that scientific, reasoned part of us all. Neither element is able to be considered fabric by itself. It is only when these elements are woven together that we have a useful fabric.
