Ribbed Heirloom Tomato
This is the way many ideas for paintings come to me. I’m walking through the kitchen and on the window sill I see a bright red tomato. It catches my eye. It has been there a week - I saw it but nothing happened - “That’s cool” might have been my thought. Then I walk by and see how interesting it looks and realize that it will not last long - it’s ripe and it will be eaten soon. Then the photo session happens, saving it for posterity. It may turn into a painting or it may just hang around for years. Then I finish the brownie (the painting not the treat) and the tomato is ready for picking, it’s ripe and Im ready. I’m still in the food mode. Boom! That’s how it happens…sometimes. Other times, it’s not that easy.
I was going to title this one Medusa’s Lips. To me I see the similarity to lips and with the (stamen) green thing sticking out like snakes I thought it might be appropriate. I decided against it because - in my mind - that kind of title has to happen at the inception of the painting, not just an interesting add-on.
