Linear Construct
This Painting is Sold
Since I have been painting seriously, this is the first time I’ve tried to create an abstract painting. I needed to find out how this form felt in my head. I also had no distinct idea for beginning. My sense forced me to rely on the basics - thus, in this case, line…well line and color and composition. When you say it like that, it doesn’t sound so different from realistic painting. I see, in this type of painting, a chance to take some risks as far as representation is concerned.
My first thought was I should have fun - I did. My second thought was take this seriously - I did. While trying to refine this image I made several changes to the first iteration. I didn’t feel the frustration I sometimes feel with the “real” stuff. In fact there are no rules here. I did find myself creating some rules, just to keep myself from chaotic randomness, stopping short of rigid restrictions.
If you look at my realistic work you will see a pristine surface and a cleanness that smacks of OCD. I, therefore, purposely used vine charcoal to create the movement of the lines and when the charcoal sullied the surface, I forced myself to leave it. Part of leaving it is to show the evolution of the construction. I do confess to covering some of the skeletal structure when it became a distraction.
It feels so direct to work this way; without the translation of a photographic image, without the slavish mimicry that can be said of some realistic work. In retrospect, looking back to the last realistic pieces I felt a relaxation of the need to be so precise. Perhaps that feeling led to this change in direction. I have no idea how long this avenue of expression will last. I do know I have another idea I will pursue next - let’s see where this goes.
