In The Beginning
Here is another painting that focuses on the complexity of the growing plant, in this case, some ornamental grass in a nearby park. In this complexity I saw some shoots going green at the base of the grassy leaf. Then I looked at the entire picture and I saw a graphic representation of a Big Bang event. So, this painting it is about beginnings: new, old, restarts. It is also about the bursting out, emergence from one small place, growing larger and making yourself known. Interestingly, the image has some individual pieces of grass that don’t conform to the shape of their neighbors and many that do conform to the growth pattern. What they do once they emerge from the ground is up to them, their individual genetics. They all do, however come from very nearly the same place. It’s kinda like a small town isn’t it?
Further, for me, the bits of green are subtle, nearly hidden and that was fun to paint. You don’t see the rebirth if you are not looking close enough. My view on the big bang is simply one of awe. If that is how we started, I can’t stop my mind from going back, further in time, doing a, “chicken or egg” kinda thing. If there was a bang…what did it bang from? If all matter came from the same point in the infinite universe and there was room for it to expand, how did it all get in that one spot, that black hole? It almost seems like that big bang was a re-emergence of something that might have been before, sucked into some huge gravitational “thing” and just regurgitated. Anyway, here is my new painting that took longer than any other painting I have done, to date.
