The Nature of Light: Ice Blue

This painting is the third in a series of tinfoil paintings,  where I take a photo of something real and make a painting from it making it look the same as the photo and the result winds up looking like an abstract painting.  The objects in these paintings are just flat and 3-D shapes. I have strong light shining on them with colored cards around them, bouncing the light this way and that, the way light will always do - in similar situations.  Some colored light hits dead on and bounces back into the camera, showing clear color of the reflected light.  Other times, with a slight bend of the surface, the colored light just shoots right by the lens showing nothing, just foil.  Other times, there is a stray color or shadow that gets picked up on the ever changing surface of the foil - showing a completely different color, given the conditions of the immediate vicinity.  Anyway, it is all very much fun and complicated in its’ look and execution.  I started this one too long ago then life got in the way and things happened that took me away from painting on this canvas.  I got to work on it in fits and starts until I ultimately got to come back and finish it.  I think if this was an abstract painting, I would have lost the feeling I was trying for when I started.  But, for my view, I had the photo and my relationship to the painting, never changed so the first day and the last day I was on the same page as the painting - that is convenient.  I think I will take some time away from these complex surfaces to let my mind wander in other directions.  I’ll make some paintings that people can actually relate to.
