When I have the need of subject matter for a new painting I usually go for a drive. Of course, before I do this, I have an idea where I’m going and what I’m looking for. One day last fall, when the light is bright and clean, I went to a local trucking firm (Fort Edward Express) and asked if I could walk around in the yard taking pictures of what trucks and trailers that were there. The owner said I could. I was looking for a hopper trailer - the ones with 3 separate sections in the body of the tank. I guess these are called - Bulk Hoppers - and I think they carry dry goods like cement prior to adding water and stone. I chose this shape because of the sculptural nature of the entire trailer. There is a lot of surface and a lot of negative space - both things that make good sculpture. I chose a view that is very oblique placing a lot of perspective on the shape. The other thing I wanted to do was stress the brightness of the lighting from the sun.
