In this painting we see some cows - 4 cows - they live, as I also do, in Washington County, NY. I was out driving around with my camera one day and came across these girls. They seemed as interested in me as I was in them. I liked the grouping and had to hurry to get the shot. Eventually, after running out of ideas I came across this in my files and decided it was time to turn it into a painting.
That’s all true - but - there is a sub-text here that you wouldn’t know unless I told you. This painting came about at the beginning of covid. That says a lot. To go further, I was beginning to feel some kind of ennui as far a painting was concerned. So, I got started on this and then Covid hit full on and I stopped. I figured, “What’s the point?” Then, as I got further and further from the actual working day of painting, other things slid into place and a change happened. Natural distractions will creep in and become the new reality. In this case, that is what happened. Now it seemed I was no longer a painter. The time frame for this is more than 2 years. At some point, I looked at this painting - unfinished and said…, “What a cliché - I live in Washing County and I’m painting cows…” Time marched on and covid was more or less over and I thought, even though I don’t feel like painting I think I will finish this - that is a predictable given, considering my personality. So I did finish it and I did get “into” it and I do like the way it came out.
I still am not painting but I think I can feel it creeping back into my brain.
