Conspiracy
I was looking to take a break from the paintings that I do that have an enormous amount of information in them. This painting has 6 things in it - 5, if you don't count the shadow on the curtain.
These three gourds adorned our house this autumn and before they got thrown out, I decided they had a story to tell. By arranging them on the shelf I saw that they each seemed to have a personality. One was a little larger and one was a bit skinnier, and such. When I chanced on this arrangement I noticed a sinister bent on the part of two of them. They seemed to be chatting with each other, leaving out the larger fellow. I saw a parallel here with the real world and perhaps more dangerous times in Venice's back alleys. (I use this because there are some alleyways in Venice that are ideal for ambush.) So, when I lit the still life I tried to do some dramatic lighting that might suggest a stage play wherein some villains would plot against the rounder taller, better looking gourd with the erect bearing. It was fun painting this.
