In my new approach to "Complicated" subject matter, I searched for another natural subject that would challenge me. When I took this photo I had no idea it would turn into a painting. I just thought it looked neat. Then I noticed it had that extreme contrast that I like and I saw that it had a limited palette. Then I saw the chaotic manner in which the grasses presented themselves, after being cut at the end of winter and the beginning of the new growth. That brief narrative made my brain see the possibilities, with this subject. I guess it was complicated enough - it took me over 2 months to get it where I felt I had accomplished my goal. I kinda like the stylized oak leaves that are mixed in with the reed shaped ornamental grass. I was going to make them a little more realistic but I thought -"Leave them alone (no pun intended)" - I liked that they were not as realistic as I usually paint. The grass too is not very realistic. I also have to confess that it is also not very true to the original photo. I figured that this is my concession to abstract art. I could have internalized the shapes and the movement and translated that into a true abstraction but that is not my nature. I rather like that it sort of looks real and yet has many of the attributes of a dancing abstract piece.
