Cattails
I seem to be in a new mode now. This is my second painting using the idea of a complicated surface - like my industrial pieces - in the world of Nature. The first one was a corn field and the next one will be of some ornamental grasses left over from last year. This painting was approached differently than the corn painting because the individual stems of cattails are so numerous and so thin. I had to approach it like a regular artist - painting soft color changes first, with some darker areas for shaping and then add many lines of stalks over the surface. It was much easier, that way but I didn't feel I had control of everything. Some people would say that was a good thing. I guess it was, but I feel more comfortable knowing that I am rendering an exact moment in time. I think because I pushed this view, right into the midst of the cattails I created a realistic painting that also doubles as a simple abstract "swipe" of color.
