To be perfectly honest, this painting started out as a bucolic representation of melting snow in my driveway. Something happened along the way. I kept trying to replicate the magic of the snow edge as the sun melted it, stopping at the edge of the shadow. I like edges so I wanted to try to reproduce what was happening. When I tried that, it seemed that I just wasn’t getting what I thought was there. Maybe I was giving it more “magic” than was really there. Anyway, I gave up on that and tried to segue into an abstract with similar edge break-up. Well, one thing led to another and I went full on into a narrative where these large shapes were, actually armies (I know, sometimes I’m like an 8 year old) with the brave soldiers on the edges leading the way to the enemy. I tried to make it seem that one side was much more into the moment than the other…and thus, likely to win the battle. Both sides have the red of anger and hatred but only one side has the aggressive march aiming to pierce through the enemy line. Theirs is a more vibrant, brighter red. There are a few on the opposite side painted in the same red. I did that to emphasize the anticipation of the start of the action (Later I thought it also looked like they were spies/traitors, making a soft spot for the aggressor.). They might be thinking, “…shit, this is real and they’re headed this way.” In the end, I thing the whole thing is still about edges, so maybe it was successful after all.
